PADI IDC - Scuba Instructor preparation

The biggest hurdle faced by many candidates is that there has been a gap between when they last completed their dive theory exams and when they are completing the PADI IDC.

PADI Instructor Course Prerequisites

Before we get started there are a number of prerequisites in order to participate in the PADI IDC program at Brisbane Dive Academy and to go on and complete the PADI Instructor Examinations.

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must submit a medical statement verifying that you are fit for diving and signed by a physician within the last 12 months.  This is required no less than 1 week before commencement.  No medical no IDC.
  • Submit proof of CPR training within the last 24 months. The PADI EFR course fulfills this requirement.
  • You should be a renewed PADI Divemaster or PADI Assistant Instructor, or a current Instructor affiliated with another certification agency.
  • Prior to starting the IDC, you must have been a certified diver for a minimum of 6 months and logged at least 60 dives.
  • Prior to attending the IE, you must have logged at least 100 dives.
  • Prior to certification as a PADI Instructor, you must show you have completed a PADI EFR Instructor course.
  • You are required to provide photocopies of all previous non PADI diving certifications.

PADI Instructor Course Materials & Equipment

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have all of the appropriate materials for your PADI Instructor Development Course this required list of PADI materials is not negotiable. When you sign up for the PADI IDC we will provide you with a checklist; to make sure you don’t get any surprises and we can help with any materials you do not have.

You will also need to have an appropriate and complete set of scuba diving equipment for the Instructor Course. If you are not sure what you need you can view the list on our checklist. If you do not want to bring your own gear then you can rent dive equipment from us.

Pre PADI IDC Study - what you need to do before you come on day 1

Now you have the goods it’s time to use them!

The Brisbane Dive Academy PADI IDC utilises the PADI eLearning portal, when you sign up for our instructor course we will send you an eLearning access pass within 24 hours so you can get started straight away.  You will need to have completed this prior to starting the IDC and you will have to bring along the certificate of completion.

During the online component of this course you will go through your PADI’s Guide to Teaching and your PADI Instructor manual, however it is recommended that you also have copies of the training bulletins that have been issued as additional resources.

You are also required to sit down and go through the PADI Divemaster exams, this self assessment is going to give you an idea as to whether you are going to need some help with your dive theory.  If you do not score a minimum of 75% on these exams we strongly urge you to participate on the IDC Preparation course or undertake the PADI Online dive theory program through eLearning.  Even if you get more than 75% we strongly recommend that you know exactly why you got those questions wrong!  In addition you should consider signing up for the online dive theory or the IDC Preparation course.

This is vitally important as the PADI Instructor course schedule we follow does not allow spare days for brushing up on your dive theory, this is considered prerequisite knowledge.

Take a moment!

Have you been diving for fun recently?  If not go for a dive and have fun, remember why it was that you learned to dive and wanted to become a PADI Dive Instructor.  This is really important in your life after becoming a dive instructor.

It is also a good idea to be really comfortable dealing with students so try and help out on as many courses as you can, use this opportunity to practice your skills.  If you cannot do it here run through the PADI Divemaster 20 skills skill circuit.  Have someone evaluate you using the PADI Divemaster Skill Evaluation slate and have them be critical!

During the IDC and IE, you will be required to perform a rescue exercise. Make sure you practice Rescue diver exercise #7.

Now take a deep breathe, become very Zen like and get ready for the ride.
